What is Poetry Out Loud?

Picture
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with U.S. state arts agencies to support Poetry Out Loud, a contest that encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
After successful pilot programs in Washington, DC, and Chicago, Poetry Out Loud was launched in high schools nationwide in the spring of 2006 with tens of thousands of students participating. POL has grown every year with over 365,000 students competing in 2010-2011.

Please visit the National Poetry Out Loud webpage for more information.

Contest Structure and Awards

Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure that starts at the classroom level. Winners advance to a school-wide competition.  This competition can take several forms.  Some schools integrate the POL program in grades 9-12 where student winners from each grade participate in a school-wide competition.  Others may choose to use the program for one grade level where  each classroom winners advance to the school competition.  Still others, especially small schools integrate the program in one classroom and run the school competition within that particular classroom.  The winner from each school progresses to the ND State POL Competition with the state winner moving on to the  National Finals.

Though middle school students are currently ineligible to participate in POL state competitions, POL encourages middle school instructors to use all POL materials and resources to conduct classroom and school level competitions.  See this example!

Each winner at the state level receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington to compete for the national championship. The state winner's school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The first runner-up in each state receives $100, with $200 for his or her school library. A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends is awarded annually at the National Finals.

(Awards are made in the form of lump sum cash payouts, reportable to the IRS. Tax liabilities are the sole responsibility of the winners and their families.)

Program Materials and Schedule

Poetry Out Loud curriculum materials include the online poetry anthologies, a comprehensive teacher’s guide, a DVD of National Finals performances - Learning Recitiation, and promotional and media guides. Hard copies of  materials are free for teachers participating in the official program.
Materials are sent to high schools beginning in September, and the program is run through early winter. (Poetry Out Loud does not require full class periods and can be completed in 2-3 weeks.)

A special feature available to participating teachers and students is the unique opportunity to schedule a classroom visit from a professional North Dakota Poet.  During this visit, the poet will provide a short performance and work with students on presentation skills .  There is no fee for this session and it is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

North Dakota will hold the 2014 state final on Monday, March 3, in Bismarck, ND.   Following the state finals, the National Finals will be held in Washington, DC.  (Date to be determined.)
